Katy Tigers, Terry Rangers Both Steamroll To Playoff Victories

The Katy Tigers tore up second-round 5-A Division II playoff foe Cypress Creek Saturday night, in a 53-14 runaway victory led by the Tigers’ defense and special teams.

And in 4-A Division II, the Terry rangers rolled to a 42-0 playoff shutout against Jones – the second shutout for Terry in as many playoff games.

Meanwhile, previously undefeated Lamar Consolidated saw its playoff hopes end, as the Mustangs lost in a 4-A Division I offensive battle with Yates, 46-40.

And the Needville Blue Jays ended their season with a 34-20 playoff loss to tough Liberty Hill.

Katy scored a 22-yard touchdown on the return of a kickoff Cypress Creek fumbled. The Tigers also scored on a 40-yard punt return, on a 10-yard interception runback and a safety as time was running out in their victory.

The Tigers take on Beaumont West Brook for the right to play in the quarterfinals.

The Terry Rangers’ Christian Smith ran for more than 200 yards and scored twice, while Anthony Brown and Adrian Davis each intercepted a pass for the Rangers defense to set up scores.

The Rangers set their sites on Brenham, whom they must beat to get into the quarterfinals.

Lamar held Yates’ quarterback and leading rusher Orie Lemons to just 60 yards rushing. Unfortunately, Yates has another Lemon. The Mustangs couldn’t stop Orie’s younger brother and running back Eli Lemons, who rushed for 154 yards and five touchdowns.

Meanwhile, it was a bad day for local playoff hopes on Friday, though, as several local teams were eliminated.

In District 20 5-A, Kempner rushed for 200 yards Friday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Cypress Fairbanks’ Sam McGuffie, as the Cougars were eliminated from the University Interscholastic League football playoffs in a 21-6 game.

In District 19 5-A, Strake Jesuit quarterback Tim Brady had 203 yards passing, including a 36-yard pass to Stephen Tyree, but it wasn’t enough. The Crusaders lost 27-22 to Cypress Falls’ balanced attack.

And in District 25 3-A playoffs, the West Columbia Roughnecks were blown away by a Wimberly team that converted turnovers into touchdowns and passed for more than 300 yards in a 62-7 win.

Today, the Katy Tigers enter Round 2 of the playoffs against Cypress Creek, playing at 7 p.m. on Tully Field.

Both Lamar Consolidated and the Terry Rangers have playoff games at 6 p.m. The Mustangs have home field advantage against Houston Yates, while the Rangers will play Houston Jones in Pearland.

In District 25 3-A, the Needville Blue Jays take their playoff hopes to Bryan at 2 p.m., where they’ll take on Liberty Hill.
