Veronica Torres of Richmond officially announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Fort Bend County District Clerk, saying she “brings experience, enthusiasm, and independence to provide needed leadership and change to the district clerk’s office.”

“While the incumbent has long service to our county, the district clerk’s office has become severely dysfunctional,” Torres said. “The incumbent has wasted millions of taxpayer dollars on a poorly selected computer system, has failed to provide adequate full-time trained staff for their courtrooms, has an inefficient filing system, and cannot work effectively with other elected officials.”

Torres said she’s a single parent who has raised four successful daughters, “worked hard and played by the rules to raise her family and build a career.”

She has worked as a legal process specialist in the Fort Bend County Clerk’s office, where she said she has served as a clerk for a county court at law, responsible for fee collection, processing and maintaining legal files. She was previously a legal secretary for a local attorney.

Torres attended Wharton County Junior College and said she’ll attain her paralegal certification this spring.

Born in Richmond, Torres attends Calvary Baptist Church in Rosenberg, is a former board member of the Mental Health Association of Fort Bend County, and spends her free time enjoying her daughters and her two grandsons.
