Keep Sugar Land Beautiful will host a free tree care class from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Lost Creek Park, 3703 Lost Creek Blvd. in Sugar Land
A certified arborist will teach the two-hour class and help students understand the basics of tree selection, planting and maintenance in the urban landscape.
The class is free to the public, but registration is required due to limited space. Please contact KSLB at 281-313-5752 or email info@kslb.org to register.
The tree care class should be particularly useful this year, as Sugar Land adopted a new tree-trimming ordinance designed to keep trees in the right of way from being damaged by passing vehicles. The ordinance requirements are relatively simple. Trees along neighborhood streets must be trimmed to 12 feet above the street and 8 feet above the sidewalk. Trees along other types of streets, like arterials or boulevards, must be trimmed to 14 feet above the street and 8 feet above the sidewalk.
To promote the new ordinance, the City has initiated a media campaign to get the word out to residents. Information about the new tree trimming program has been included on SLtv 16, in the Sugar Land Today magazine and on the City’s Web site.
For additional information about the new tree trimming program, contact the Sugar Land Public Works Department at 281 275-2450.
