Students at Beasley Elementary have been working on map skills with their Global Positioning System devices, purchased with a grant
from the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation.
Since GPS is finding its way into cars, construction equipment, farm machinery and even laptop computers, teachers requested the devices to give their students an edge in the real world as they use this technology to learn necessary life skills.
Students were given a map of the school grounds, where teachers
had placed hidden treasures for them to locate by following GPS
coordinates. Students enjoyed their day of searching, perhaps not realizing they were learning how to use new technology.
The grant for the GPS devices is just one of 89 grants from LEAF funded this school year. The Foundation awarded almost $138,000 to Lamar Consolidated Independent School District to enhance
learning opportunities. For more information about LEAF, contact Janice Knight at 832-223-0334.
