Fort Bend ISD Seeks Residents’ Help Naming Waterside Estates School

Fort Bend Independent School District’s Elementary School #40, at 4455 Waterside Estates Drive northeast of Richmond, soon will be named using a new process recently approved by the FBISD Board of Trustees.

The new process “provides equal opportunity for interested citizens to serve on the naming committee,” according to a statement by the school district. Also, as has been done in the past, any member of the community may submit a name for the new school for consideration by the naming committee.

After the committee has reviewed all names submitted, the top three to five names will be presented to the board of trustees for their consideration, the district stated.

Residents within Fort Bend ISD interested in serving on the naming committee for Elementary #40 are encouraged to attend one of two sign-up meetings. After the second of the two meetings, 10 names will be randomly selected from the list of those who attended one of the meetings and signed up. Those 10 people will then make up the naming committee, according to FBISD.

Five other members, consisting of the superintendent (or her designee), the school’s principal, one teacher, one student and one board member, will complete the 15-member naming committee, the district stated.

The first sign-up meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 3, in the cafeteria at Lakeview Elementary, 314 Lakeview Drive in Sugar Land.

The second meeting will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, in the cafeteria at Pecan Grove Elementary, 3330 Old South Drive near Richmond.

After the 10 community names are selected at the end of the April 4 sign-up meeting, the naming committee will then meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, in the Board Room of the FBISD Administration Building at 16431 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land. The committee will hear community input for the first half of the meeting, and will then convene to review all names nominated and select the top three to five names.

In addition to submitting names for consideration at the April 6 meeting, names may also be submitted at either of the two sign-up meetings. The community may also submit names for the school to: FBISD Community Relations, 16431 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land, 77479; or fax to 281-634-1712, or

Per board police, nominations of names for a school must be written and presented in a brief two-paragraph statement that contains biographical/historical data and reasons justifying the choice. Nominations generally should be names for people or places. If a person, the individual should have attained prominence locally or nationally, and have made a significant contribution to society. If a place, the name should include historical relevance.

The board will consider final chosen names at its April 10 meeting.

Anyone with questions is asked to contact the FBISD Community Relations Department at 281-634-1100.
