Traffic on U.S. 59 promises to be heavy at Sugar Land’s Sweetwater exit for the next several days, as Texas Department of Transportation contractors finish a bridge demolition job.
It’s part two of a project undertaken so that traffic on the new, widened U.S. 59 goes over Sugar Land cross roads, instead of under them.
The bridge at U.S. 59 and University Boulevard was demolished last month, and contractor Williams Brothers Construction completed the job ahead of schedule, collecting bonuses for its efforts, according to Fort Bend County Commissioner James Patterson.
The city of Sugar Land advised on Saturday that Williams Brothers already had removed the Sweetwater bridge and that main lanes of U.S. 59 had been reopened.
However, between now and July 24, traffic entering U.S. 59 intending to go north to Houston will actually have to travel south one exit, cross under the main highway and then turn around to the north. Traffic from Sweetwater wanting to travel south on U.S. 59 will have to go north an exit and similarly turn around (see chart on home page.
Last month during the University Boulevard portion of the project, morning rush hour on U.S. 90A heading east toward Sugar Land was much heavier than usual, with half-hour drive times between the Grand Parkway and State Highway 6.
Throughout the entire construction period, Sugar Land residents can stay informed of closures and detours by visiting the highway construction page of the city’s web site.
