If Cockfighting Were Legal In Texas, No One Would Have Been Shot Saturday

Dear Editor:

Re: Gunfire Erupts During Rural Cockfight; 1 Man Killed, 1 Wounded:

If cockfighting were legal in Texas, cockfights would be held in pits built in easy-to-reach locations and would have Police in attendance to provide security like all other sporting events. The two that were shot have been deprived of their civil rights by not being afforded proper protection at a sporting event.

That you may not agree with cocking is your opinion. My opinion is that cockfighting is not cruel. I have been fighting cocks for forty-five years and if I thought for a minute that this activity was cruel I would not be a cockfighter.

I would like to note that the kind of betting that goes on at a cockfight may not be against Texas law as I seem to remember that a gentleman’s wager like a bet on a shot on the golf course or a football game where there is no house cut is legal. We take no house cuts at cockfights. The entry fee is just like a tournament fee for golf, tennis or fishing.

Think about this, the law against cocking is based on someone’s opinion, an opinion, cockers have an equal value in citizenship, how is it then that they should have to suffer as less than a full citizenship and not have police protection at the sporting event that cockers want to attend?
