Neighbor Blocks Escape Route, Deputies Bust Armed Robbery Suspects

A gutsy move by a neighbor thwarted an armed robbery in New Territory on Friday and led to the capture of three suspects.

The incident started at about 7:15 a.m., when a 36-year-old man was accosted in his front yard, in the 1300 block of Tahoe Valley Lane, by an armed man wearing a handkerchief over part of his face, according to a Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department report.

The armed man demanded the victim’s wallet, grabbed it and ran to a waiting car. “The victims’ neighbor, seeing this occur, contacted the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, and then followed the suspect vehicle into a cul-de-sac,” the sheriff’s report said. “The neighbor blocked the cul-de-sac and the three suspects bailed out of the car, fleeing in different directions.”

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call at 7:27 a.m., “set up a perimeter, and were able to capture two of the three suspects,” the department report said. The victim’s wallet, the weapon used in the robbery and the suspects’ getaway car all were recovered.

Issam Manuel Amare, 17, of the Sugar Land area, was arrested on an aggravated robbery charge and transported to the Fort Bend County Jail in Richmond, where he’s being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.

A second suspect who was waiting for Amare in the car was identified by the sheriff’s department as Renard Williams, 17, also of the Sugar Land area. According to the police report, Williams was interviewed by detectives and may face charges of engaging in organized crime, or aggravated robbery.

The third suspect, whom the sheriff’s department identified as Derek Huey, 19, of the Sugar Land area, ran to a Randall’s Grocery Store in New Territory and called family members to pick him up, the sheriff’s report said.

“During this time, a deputy went to the vehicle owners’ home and learned Derek was in possession of the vehicle. The deputy also learned Huey’s brother had picked him up from Randall’s and was en route back home.”

When Huey arrived at his home, “he was detained, and agreed to give detectives a statement. Huey could also face charges of engaging in an organized crime or aggravated robbery,” the sheriff’s report said.
