Charles Cantu, 32, a volunteer firefighter with the Cy-Fair Fire Department, was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston after being shot about 5:15 a.m. According to a Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman, he died either during the flight or shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Cantu’s father, Roy Martin Cantu, 58, was arrested by sheriff’s deputies and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Terriann Carlson said investigators with the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office were at the crime scene today, and charges later may be upgraded to murder.

Sheriff’s deputies received a call that shots had been fired in the 7200 block of Corta Calle, in the Mission Bend area in Fort Bend County, Carlson said.

Investigators learned there was a father-son argument, she said. “It started out as a verbal dispute,” but then Roy Cantu allegedly retrieved a gun and shot Charles Cantu.

Carlson said “there was some alcohol involved,” but she had no additional details about the incident.

Roy Cantu was booked into the Fort Bend County Jail in Richmond, where he remains.
