Fort Bend County law enforcement officers say they will conduct a “warrant sweep” of the county, and greater Houston, looking for people with outstanding traffic warrants.
But those individuals can avoid jail time, and could get reduced or dismissed fines and fees, by taking advantage of Fort Bend’s third annual countywide traffic warrant amnesty program, taking place during the month of February.
“Individuals with outstanding traffic warrants may avoid the embarrassment of being arrested at their homes, work places or schools by appearing in court during the month of February,” said Sugar Land Police Officer Mike Richards, department’s Warrant Division, who spearheaded the upcoming countywide amnesty program.
Each Justice of the Peace precinct in the county, along with police departments for Sugar Land, Stafford, Missouri City, Meadows Place, Katy, Rosenberg, Richmond, Needville and Arcola will participate in the program, according to a statement from the City of Sugar Land.
Courts in each of the jurisdictions “will offer various incentives, including the possible reduction or dismissal of fines and fees for defendants who appear in court during the amnesty period,” the city said. People with outstanding warrants should contact their respective courts regarding specific programs and hours of operation.
“Following the amnesty period, officers of the Sugar Land Police Department, as well as officers of other police agencies, will conduct a warrant sweep of the greater Houston area and Fort Bend County,” Richards said. “Individuals with outstanding warrants will be arrested. No amnesty of any type will be offered during the sweep.”
