New Brazos River Toll Bridge Could Connect University Blvd. To Booth

In a few years, a new toll bridge could cross the Brazos River, taking traffic from south University Boulevard in Sugar Land to Greatwood, or the tiny town of Booth.
Fort Bend County Commissioners Court members voted Tuesday to add the bridge to the county’s Major Thoroughfare Plan. The plan identifies major roadways in the county, including future roadways, although road or bridge’s inclusion in the plan doesn’t guarantee it will be created.
County Judge Bob Hebert said it could be 10 years or more before such a bridge were built - or it might never be built. Among other things, a feasibility study would have to be conducted to show that sufficient traffic would use the toll bridge to justify its existence.
However, he said, “we’re probably going to be able to get that bridge done quicker” than an eventual extension of the Fort Bend Parkway, which also would cross the Brazos, before proceeding west to State Highway 36, according to the thoroughfare plan.
Precinct 4 County Commissioner James Patterson said under the newly revised plan, University Boulevard south of the University of Houston campus would branch west and cross the new toll bridge, putting traffic on a road in the vicinity of Agnes Road, possibly connecting to Thompsons Road near Booth.
“It could be a back-door way to get to Greatwood,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers said.
While City of Sugar Land officials have not wholeheartedly embraced the idea, Meyers said he has been told they would consider it.
Commissioners said one purpose of the thoroughfare plan is to alert property owners and developers to the county’s long-range intentions. The plan was first created in 1984.
