Students at First Colony Middle School were evacuated Friday morning when school officials discovered a natural gas leak outside the school.
According to Fort Bend Independent School District spokeswoman Mary Ann Simpson, the Sugar Land Fire Department was called shortly after the leak was discovered around 8 a.m. Firefighters located the leak and contacted Entex.
The students at the school, which number about 1,100 according to information from the district, were evacuated with faculty members to Christ United Methodist Church, which is across the street from the school, Simpson said.
Entex repaired the leak and students returned to their classrooms by about 9:50 a.m.
“We are fortunate and grateful this incident was not more serious,” Simpson said.
