Area Cities Under Weekend Flood Watch As Swollen Rivers Rise

The San Bernard River is flooding near East Bernard and Boling, and the National Weather Service issued a flood warning Friday on the swollen Brazos River near Rosharon, predicting it will rise 5.5 feet above flood stage by Monday.

Richmond appears not to be in danger of flooding, as the weather service predicts the Brazos will crest at 43 feet on Friday night, 5 feet below flood stage. At present, however, the river has spilled over its normal banks at the 20-foot level and is at nearly 35 feet.

After three days of hard rain over a wide area, the San Bernard began flooding at East Bernard on Thursday. Friday morning, the National Weather Service extended that flood warning through Sunday, as the river level has reached 19.8 feet. Flood level is 17 feet, and the weather service predicts the river will crest at 20 feet sometime Friday night.

At Boling, the situation could get more serious, as the San Bernard reached flood stage of 18 feet Thursday night and is predicted to hit 28 feet – 10 feet above flood stage – over the weekend.

The weather service is warning people to stay away from these rivers and remove all livestock and machinery from their flood plains. Also, motorists are cautioned not to attempt to drive on water-covered roads.
