Protesters To Rall At Sugar Land City Hall, Call For An End To War In Iraq

A New Territory woman has organized a 5 p.m. rally at Sugar Land City Hall, sponsored by liberal political action organization MoveOn.org, to protest the war in Iraq.

Nancy Hentschel said the rally is being held to protest President George W. Bush’s veto of a measure that would have provided more funding for the Iraq war effort, but required a withdrawal of troops to begin by July.

“We’re trying to remind him of the mandate from the last election,”Hentschel said. “The war’s got to come to an end. The Congress knows it, and Bush needs to hear it. This can’t be an endless war.”

She acknowledged Sugar Land’s political reputation as “the heart of Bush country,” adding, “but if people are afraid to speak out, bad things happen.

“There is a fear factor,” Hentschel said. “I think this whole fear thing has been sold for six years.”

As for MoveOn, she said the organization is providing “computer support and moral support,” but did not provide money or organizational support, adding “if I had not agreed to do it, it would not have been done.”

According to the MoveOn web site, the organization has sponsored anti-war protests across the country. The Sugar Land protest rally is one of three MoveOn is associated with in the area, with others planned for Strawberry Park in Pasadena, and Lake Woodlands Bridge in The Woodlands.

Like the Sugar Land City Hall rally, all are scheduled for 5 p.m.
