Two 5th grade students in Fort Bend ISD have won awards for creating posters related to the American Revolution. The contest, which is sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), awards children nationally who participate in the contest through the local chapters of the SAR. Each year the SAR selects a new topic for the contest. This year’s topic was The Battle of Yorktown.
Lance Salge which was the SAR representative for these schools reported, “The Alexander Hodge chapter of the SAR in Sugar Land, sponsored Taylor Charlton of Walker Station Elementary and Cynthia Yusuf of Brazos Bend Elementary (both schools are in the New Territory Community of Sugar Land). Each student will receive a $50 Savings Bond and a certificate for having the top poster from their school. In March, Cynthia’s poster advanced to the State level of the contest where her poster won 3rd place among posters submitted from across Texas. She will be awarded a $200 Savings Bond for her well researched facts and creative depiction of this famous battle of the American Revolution. Both students did an excellent job on their posters and we hope more schools from around the area will participate next year.”
“We wish to also thank the 5th grade Team Leaders, Sharon Gurske of Brazos Bend Elementary and LeighAnn Shumate of Walker Station Elementary, for supporting this program”, said Salge.
The SAR also sponsors an annual oration and essay contest on for High School students as well as other community and veteran activities. For more information you can contact Lee Phillips at lee.phillips@prodigy.net or 281-242-5909.
