SL Book Club To Discuss ‘The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao’

Fort Bend County Libraries is inviting booklovers to attend the next meeting of the Sugar Land Book Club this Tuesday, Jan. 27, to discuss “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.”

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the library’s conference room.

A native of the Dominican Republic, author Junot Díaz draws from his family’s experiences – from their roots in Santo Domingo to their migration to New Jersey – as he tells the tragi-comic story of Oscar Wao, a 300-pound, nerdy, socially-awkward, amateur writer who wants nothing more than to find a girlfriend, friends, and inspiration for the great fantasy novel he wants to write.

Thanks to the fukú americanus (a multigenerational family curse) that follows them from the Dominican Republic however, the family feels certain that their future in America is predestined for misery and woe, and Oscar’s failed attempts at love seem to be further proof of the supernatural shadow that clouds their lives.

Published in 2007, “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics’ Circle Award.

Anyone interested in joining this literary-review club is invited to attend.
