Volunteer Fort Bend Needs English Tutors, ‘Green Thumbs’

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.  Here are some current needs:

Make a difference

English language tutors are needed to help Fort Bend residents new to our country achieve literacy.  Eager adult students from around the world are waiting to learn English from dedicated tutors who receive training from a Sugar Land educational agency.  Volunteers ages 18 or older who are interested in becoming tutors are encouraged to register for the following training sessions: Monday, March 6, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday March 4, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 7, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Green thumbs wanted

Team up with other volunteers in tending a Sugar Land community garden that produces a variety of fruits and vegetables to help feed the hungry in the area.  Rain or shine, adults and youngsters alike can help on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday mornings by assisting with digging, planting, weeding, and watering the garden. Local food pantries reap the bounty and distribute it to families in need.

Building dreams

Bring your hammers and paint brushes to partner with low-income families who are achieving the American dream of home ownership.   Providing general construction help for a local housing program in Rosenberg, you’ll bring hope to families trying to make a new start. Even if you have no background in construction, you can easily be trained in ways to participate effectively in this initiative. Volunteer shifts are available Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Additional opportunities:

-         Help with receptionist duties, phone coverage, photocopying, and filing at a women’s shelter in Rosenberg.

-         Musicians are invited to provide afternoon entertainment at a senior living community in Katy.

-         Help a sports organization in Missouri City with data entry and word processing.

-         Groom, walk, and play with dogs and cats awaiting adoption at an animal shelter in Rosenberg.

-         Be a bingo caller and bring cheer and good fellowship to residents of a healthcare center in Missouri City.

-         Interact in fun activities twice a month with a child (age 6 to 15) in need of an adult friend.
