Results From Investigation Into Stafford Police Shooting Will Be Presented To Grand Jury

The Stafford Police Department and Fort Bend County District Attorney’s investigators are probing Wednesday’s fatal police shooting for presentation to a county grand jury.

That information surfaced in a statement issued by the department Thursday afternoon, in which a few additional details were released about the shooting death of Aaron Hobart, 19, by Stafford Officer Jesus Estrada.

According to the police statement, the Stafford department received a 911 call at 3:05 p.m. Wednesday from someone at a home in the 12100 block of Aspen Lane.

“This 911 call involved a request for crisis intervention assistance,” the police statement said. Police had earlier confirmed that the call came from one of Hobart’s parents, who apparently had been in an argument with him.

“Officer J. Estrada responded to the emergency assistance call and arrived at the location shortly thereafter,” the police statement said.

“Officer Estrada entered the residence to assess the nature of the emergency. Immediately upon entry to the residence, Officer Estrada was attacked by 19-year-old Aaron Hobart,” the department statement said. “During the struggle, Mr. Hobart was shot by Officer Estrada.”

Hobart was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital where he later died, the department said. Estrada was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was treated for injuries received during the struggle.

Earlier Thursday, Police Det. Raphael Virata said Estrada, who has been with the department for about two years, was at home on, and has been reassigned from patrol duty pending an investigation.

Virata said the incident marked the first fatal shooting involving a Stafford police officer.
