Give Time To Help Victims Of Abuse Through Volunteer Fort Bend

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.  Here are some current needs:

Advocate for victims of abuse

Be an advocate for women victimized by domestic abuse.  Volunteering with an organization that works to prevent violence against Asian women, you’ll help heal the hurt of past abuse and foster healthier interaction among family members in the future.  A comprehensive 40-hour training program will equip you to handle calls from your home, providing peer counseling when appropriate and referring women on to other needed services.    Knowledge of an Asian language is helpful but not required.

Be a role model

Create memories lasting a lifetime by becoming a mentor to a boy or girl from a single-parent home. Getting together twice a month at mutually convenient times with a youngster between the ages of 6 and 15, the two of you can enjoy recreational activities or simply discuss his or her problems and aspirations.  The sponsoring agency will provide you with training and ongoing support.  This assignment requires a valid driver’s license and background check. The minimum age for volunteers is 18.

Mentoring through art

Artists and art assistants are invited to share their time and talent with at-risk children in Fort Bend schools and social service agencies. If you are skilled in painting, music, poetry, photography, ceramics, or almost any other art or craft form, consider spending a little time to help kids express emotions in a healthy manner and realize that learning can be fun.  After-school programs are currently scheduled for Fridays, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.  The application process includes a background check.
