Sugar Land Book Club To Review ‘The Double Bind’ At April Meeting

Fort Bend County Libraries invites Sugar Land-area booklovers to attend the next meeting of the Sugar Land Book Club on Tuesday, April 28.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the library’s conference room.

The book to be discussed is “The Double Bind” by Chris  Bohjalian.

Bohjalian uses characters from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” as a supporting cast for the suspense novel. Laurel Estabrook is a young case worker at a homeless shelter in Vermont. Having survived a near-rape six years previously, Laurel has fought to overcome the fears that have haunted her since the attack.

Her fears resurface, however, after the death of Bobbie Crocker, a homeless man who had lived at the shelter. Laurel is given the task of going through a box of photographs that Crocker had horded for many years. Among the old photographer’s celebrity photographs, Laurel finds what appears to be a picture of herself riding a bike on a country lane – exactly where she was riding her bike when she was attacked.

The mystery behind the photographer and his photograph leads Laurel to West Egg and the home of Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s descendents. As Laurel pieces together the story of Crocker’s life, from privileged rich kid on Long Island to mentally ill man living on the streets, she begins to see how much people can be shaped by the events of their lives, and is more determined than ever to put closure on the attack that has shadowed her recent years.

Anyone interested in joining the literary-review club is invited to attend.
