Residents in Fort Bend and surrounding counties have an opportunity to learn about disaster preparedness from experts, including National Weather Service forecaster Dan Reilly, at a free Community Emergency Preparedness Fair on May 9.
The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 14555 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land.
Gifford Nielsen, president of the church’s Houston Texas South Stake, said the event will offer valuable insights for families.
“We all learned with (Hurricane) Ike that the effects of a disaster can last for days or weeks after the winds and rain die down,” Nielsen said. “Unlike hurricanes, some disasters can occur with little or no warning. Preparation is the key.”
In addition to preparations for natural disasters, the fair will feature information on preparing for an unexpected death, job loss, property damage or financial loss.
Attendees will also have a chance to learn about food storage, creating a 72-hour emergency kit, water purification, generators, gun safety and other topics. They can also give blood, check their blood pressure, and participate in child developmental screening.
Members of the Sugar Land police and fire departments are slated to be on hand to provide information.
Children can participate in a poster contest in which the winner will receive a new bicycle.
