NRG Employees Fund Donates To LEAF To Fund Self-Esteem Books

A $2,500 donation from the NRG Employee Charitable Fund through the Lamar Education Awards Foundation has helped a self-esteem book study for girls in grades three through five at 10 Lamar CISD elementary campuses.

The books give the girls an opportunity to share problems with school counselors in a safe environment. They were chosen based on topics that are both age-appropriate and beneficial.

The program is designed to prevent risky behaviors associated with low self-esteem, such as smoking, drinking, eating disorders and unsafe sexual behavior. Providing support for a strong emotional foundation will in turn create an individual ready to reach her full potential, the district said.

The books purchased included:

-         “The Feelings Book: The Care and Keeping of Emotions;”

-         “Don’t Give It Away: A Workbook of Self-awareness and Self-Affirmations for Young Women;”

-         “My Feet Aren’t Ugly: A Girl’s Guide to Loving Herself from the Inside Out;”

-         “A Smart Girls’ Guide to Manners;”  and

-         “Dear Mrs. Parks, A Dialogue with Today’s Youth.”

“We are so appreciative of the employees at NRG for approving this donation to help our young girls build up their confidence,” said LEAF board President Lonnie Meadows. “Hopefully next year we will be able to have this program on all LCISD elementary campuses.”

LEAF was created to encourage teachers to develop creative instructional strategies in the classroom. District teachers are given the opportunity to make their creative ideas a reality, while positively impacting student learning.

LEAF awarded more than $171,000 during the 2008 funding period and more than $903,000 in the past nine years.

This is a nice story about caring and contributing, but NRG owns the Parish Coal plant that is five miles from Sugar Land and has been emitting even more pollution lately than they normally do, due to recent shut down and startups of their 2 coal burning plants.
