Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations. Here are some current needs:
Train a guide dog
Raise a puppy for an organization that assigns guide dogs to visually impaired people. In-depth training will equip you to care for and teach a puppy that will eventually become a companion to someone in need of the dog’s services. This assignment calls for responsible volunteers willing to integrate the dog thoroughly into their family lives and daily routines. The duration of commitment varies but is typically in the range of 12 to 18 months.
Peer counseling
Provide assistance to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Women and men peer counselors will be trained by a Sugar Land agency that works to affirm life by meeting the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of anyone affected by an unplanned pregnancy. Sign up today for a new six-week training series being held on Tuesday evenings in Sugar Land that will teach volunteers how to counsel women on their individual situations and needs.
Volunteer “side walkers”
Fun and fresh air are in store for volunteers participating in a therapeutic horseback-riding program for children and adults with disabilities. Based at stables in Fort Bend, the program uses volunteers to accompany these folks while they enjoy the unique thrill of a quiet horseback stroll in a protected environment. Register today for training in June. This upbeat assignment will be available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Volunteers as young as 14 are invited to participate.
