Barbara Jordan Board Says It’s Actively Seeking Funding Sources To Operate Center, Park

The decision by Barbara Jordan Youth Center not to deed Barbara Jordan Park to Fort Bend County came after the center’s board voted against the measure.
The non-profit organization sent information about the vote, and other related information on Monday, in response to an article last week about the proposal.
At its May 12 meeting, Fort Bend County Commissioners Court was to have voted on accepting the park, to be operated by the county Parks and Recreation Department. Precinct 1 Commissioner Richard Morrison said he’d been approached about the proposal by two Barbara Jordan Center officers, who indicated the center no longer had necessary money to operate and maintain the park.
But the agenda item was pulled, Morrison said, after youth center Board President Creed Henry objected to deeding the park to the county.
On Monday, the center sent an email saying a majority of the board had voted not to deed over the park.
Money to run the park has come from grants, gifts, donations and fund raisers over the past few years, “but due to the present economical downturn, the Barbara Jordan Youth Center has experienced a significant reduction in operational funding,” the organization said. “The present board of directors is actively seeking additional sources of charitable income for the Barbara Jordan Youth Center.”
The organization also said its board directors “ardently welcome a continued partnership with the county, George Foundation and other funding entities for the purpose of maintaining a facility that has proven to contribute to the safety and well being of the Needville Community.”
