Alerted by a bank employee, Sugar Land police nabbed a man wanted in two area bank robberies on Monday, possibly as he prepared to pull off a third one.
Abdul Rehman, 45, of Sugar Land, has been charged in connection with an April 18 robbery of a First Community Bank branch at 2735 Town Center Blvd.; and also in a May 20 robbery of a Houston Community Bank branch at 19855 Southwest Freeway.
A Sugar Land Police Department spokesman said detectives believe Rehman may have been seconds away from committing another robbery on Monday, at a First Bank branch at 1735 Lake Pointe Parkway, when a bank employee recognized him from a flyer detectives distributed in the area and apparently scared him off.
Witnesses at the bank were able to give police a “good description” of Rehman’s vehicle, and a citizen driving behind Rehman also became suspicious, called police and spoke with a dispatcher, helping officers locate the suspect.
Police stopped Rehman’s vehicle near State Highway 6 and U.S. 90A and arrested him. He is being held in Fort Bend County Jail in Richmond in lieu of $95,000 bond.
Rehman never produced a gun in the robberies, according to police reports. In the May incident, he placed a note in front of a teller, demanding cash.
Rehman also did little to disguise himself, and witnesses to both robberies noted the robber wore distinctive square, metal glasses. Rehman wore glasses fitting that discription in his police mug shot.
