As power costs begin to climb in the face of increasing summer heat, the Fort Bend CORPS has announced it is continuing its energy efficiency program this summer.
The goal of the initiative is to provide comprehensive, whole-house repair and restoration to maximize electricity savings for low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners.
Some of the home repairs include installing attic and wall insulation, solar screens, compact fluorescent lamps, Energy Star room air conditioners, Energy Star ceiling fans and Energy Star refrigerators.
Other inspections and repairs include air duct efficiency and air infiltration. All repairs are done free of charge to the homeowner.
“It is such a pleasure to be able to help people in a way that also benefits the environment,” Fort Bend CORPS Executive Director Ron Castillo said. “We hope to raise awareness about this program so that it reaches those in need.”
The energy efficiency program came into existence through a grant from CenterPoint Energy’s Agency in Action program. Available to homeowners year round, the grant provides money for newer home equipment and installation costs.
In the last 18 months the CORPS has completed 358 energy efficiency projects.
In addition to the energy efficiency program, the Fort Bend CORPS offers four other programs:
- Hearts & Hammers,
- Roofs Over Fort Bend,
- an interior repair program, and
- a neighborhood cleanup program.
In existence since 1999 and created by the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council, the Fort Bend CORPS exists to initiate and coordinate community efforts to revitalize low-income areas in Fort Bend County. The primary focus is to provide home repair assistance to restore safe and decent housing for low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners who are physically and financially unable to make needed repairs to their homes.
The Fort Bend CORPS is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation funded by monetary donations, in-kind donations, public grant monies and volunteer work crews. All repairs are provided free of charge to the home owner.
