Ilagan was chosen based on his academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a recommendation by teacher Kimberly Taylor, and his involvement in school and community activities.

The Lone Star Leadership Academy provides unique opportunities for outstanding students in grades 5-8 to learn about the spirit of Texas and what it means to be from the Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learned, complete problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in leadership groups.

In addition, academy attendees meet other students from across the state and make friends while adding to their resume of academic achievements, developing leadership skills and bringing home information to supplement what they are learning in school.

Nicholas is the son of Joseph and Venus Ilagan
