Community

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.  Here are some current needs:

Take the wheel

Living independently is a little easier for elderly persons in Fort Bend County thanks to an agency that uses volunteers to take them to medical appointments and grocery stores.  If you have a good driving record, consider using your car or van to help one or more of these seniors run essential errands.  The most pressing need is for volunteers willing to help out on occasional weekdays.

Under your wing

Baby birds will be your focus when you volunteer in the avian section of a wildlife rehabilitation center near Hammerly and Beltway 8. Staff there will be happy to teach you all you need to know about the care and feeding of these feathered friends to enable you to nurse them to good health. Duty shifts are generally available during the daytime on weekdays and weekends year-round. During the summer, evening shifts are also available.  The minimum age for volunteers is 14, but youngsters down to age 12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult volunteer.

Be prepared

A disaster drill will be held in Rosenberg on July 18 to test the readiness of and fine-tune procedures for dealing with a pandemic impacting Fort Bend County.  Lots of volunteers will be needed to make this drill realistic, with the largest number playing the role of persons potentially infected. Individual volunteers should be at least age 18, though youth organizations and families with younger children are cordially invited to participate.

Additional opportunities:

-         Be a bingo caller and bring cheer and good fellowship to residents of a healthcare center in Missouri City.

-         Groom, walk, and play with dogs and cats awaiting adoption at an animal shelter in Rosenberg.

-         Help with receptionist duties, phone coverage, photocopying, and filing at a women’s shelter in Rosenberg.

-         Housekeeping specialists are needed to help maintain a clean and tidy environment at a women’s resource center in Rosenberg.

-         Musicians are invited to provide afternoon entertainment at a senior living community in Katy.

-         Perform interviews and provide helpful feedback to job seekers in a faith based job search program in Fort Bend County.
