Amateur boxing is coming to the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds, with up to 50 male and female boxers lining up in an event that will benefit senior citizens.

“Knock Out Senior Hunger” will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at fairgrounds Building C at 4310 State Highway 6. Proceeds will go to Fort Bend Senior Meals on Wheels and the Fort Bend Boxing Club.

The club, which is putting on the event, will present up to 25 boxing bouts sanctioned by the USA Boxing Federation. Competitors are members of the Gulf Association of Boxers, and range in age from 8 to 35 years old. The association draws its boxers from an area including Houston, Fort Bend County, Wharton, Victoria and El Campo.

“My family receives home-delivered meals from Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels,” said Fort Bend Boxing Club coach Blas Perez. “I wanted to find a way to give back to the organization.”

Organizing the boxing event has done just that, giving Perez “the opportunity to work with the youth and the seniors in an effort to strengthen the foundation and future of the community,” he said.

Event sponsorships are available from $250 to $5,000. Tickets are $15 for ringside, $10 for general admission and $5 for children 12 and under. For tickets or sponsorship information, call Perez at 281-865-3650.
