Public Benefits From Boy Scout’s Seabourne Park Project

The public now can enjoy the fruits of Eagle Scout candidate Austin Smith’s labors in Rosenberg.

A wildlife observation deck, planned and managed by Smith and built by him and other members of Boy Scout Troop 1146, has opened to the public at Rosenberg’s Seabourne Creek Park.

The 16-foot-square elevated wood deck was an “Eagle Project,” a requirement for those working to attain the Boy Scouts’ highest rank.

A Foster High School senior, Smith and his troop took on the project after Rosenberg City Council approved construction of a wildlife observation deck at Seabourne, during a February council meeting.

To reach the Eagle Scout rank, a scout must earn at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate Scout spirit, service and leadership. Among the requirements is a service project known as an Eagle Project, which the scout must plan, organize and manage.

The project is required to benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts.

Eagle Scout candidates in need of community service projects can contact Rosenberg Parks and Recreation Director Darren McCarthy to discuss ideas. He can be reached at 832-595-3939.
