Olson Urges Delay on Paperwork Submission for ‘Cash for Clunkers’

Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood urging the U.S. Transportation Department grant an extension of the reimbursement application deadline for auto dealers taking part in the “cash for clunkers” program.

Olson said the extension was needed to because of the time needed to process the large number of automobile transactions under the federal trade-in program.

“This extension is needed to allow transactions to be properly reviewed and processed given the bureaucratic problems that have accompanied this program,” Olson said.  “Genuine applications should not be punished as a result of the large volume of transactions that must be dealt with. Auto dealers and consumers deserve the opportunity to utilize the program without fear of bureaucratic red tape interfering.”

Olson said while keeping Monday’s deadline for consummating vehicle transactions intact, his request was only for the time needed to allow the Transportation Department to process paperwork properly.

“Clearly the deadlines that have been extended in the last 24 hours demonstrate the need for this extension,” Olson wrote.

The text of the full letter to LaHood is below.

“I write to express my concern regarding the application deadline for automobile dealers with regard to the cash for clunkers program.  I respectfully request that the deadline to submit reimbursement applications be extended to August 31, 2009 while keeping intact today’s deadline for consummating vehicle transactions.

“Many automobile dealers across my district have made a good faith effort to follow the guidelines of the program and have run into problems with website accessibility or rashes of customers in the final days of the program.  Even with a clearly defined “wind down strategy,” dealers are still finding it difficult to submit the required paperwork.

“Given today’s challenges facing the automobile industry we cannot let bureaucratic obstacles prevent dealers from receiving their promised reimbursements.”

Less eye rolling and more eye opening would be in good order for megabite and those in his tree.

  3. MEGABITE says:

It’s all a big conspiracy theory against you, anthony. Yep.
Uh-huh. *rolling eyes* Gross exaggeration and sensationalism doesn’t work on me, hack. You’re barking up the wrong tree.

  4. santhony says:

Murphy, it’s pretty funny watching the party hacks go back and forth on Nick, Pete or Tom. Since they all took the same money from the same companies who cares who you back. I agree with you b-tabor. Fire them all and elect people without strings attached and not playing the deception game with the public. BTW, I heard P.O. opposed the auto bailouts and now he’s working to give them more time. Just another sheeple leader and did you see Bob Hebert introducing him the other night (King of our local corporate welfare bunch). Is that all that is left of our county gop. A bunch of lackies on the corporate tax rolls whipping us the voters into line. Who do they think they are kidding and whom do you think you are kidding Mr. Megabite? They are the reason we carry the highest property taxes in the state per home value. Just another party hack, sheeple leader…….find me someone without the strings and I will vote for them and party doesn’t matter jerk.

  5. MEGABITE says:

let me guess, a Lampson backer? tsk tsk tsk Poor thing…

  6. MEGABITE says:

Speaking of ignorant. Are you done Olson bashing now? Feel better?

  7. Joe Murphy says:

Good and ethical reasoning does not always come out of a law school. The Rice connection is a puzzle though. If he graduated at all, it must have been in “pandering to corporate corruption and leading ignorant mobs to their own self destruction 101.”

  8. MEGABITE says:

A welder calling a Rice grad, UT Law School grad and navy pilot an “idiot”. Now I’ve heard everything. *rolling eyes* What we have here is a clear case of someone that posts just to read his own writing.

    Repeat after me. . . . ‘fire congress’, ‘fire congress’. . . etc…

  11. b_tabor says:

I like that bumper sticker that says ‘fire congress’!

  12. FtBendConservative says:

no santhony no one said that.

But what I did say some when they run out of facts resort to juvenile name calling.

  13. santhony says:

I seem to remember Pete voting against the auto bailout money. Are you saying he is now supporting it? How conservative is such government run monopolies? I’m with you Joe, they’re all idiots and only feeding off the tax trough while jokers like Bobby sheeple lead in cadence.

  14. b_tabor says:

Mr. Murphy it is important to know a few facts about this recent Olsen about face. He first came out against the auto bailouts which this “clunker” money came from and now is supporting it. Much like the pseudo-conservative attacking you in this thread. If you search his past posts you will find a long history of him defending anyone from his party promoting higher spending and taxes while feeding their corporate backers. You are correct about FBC, he is no conservative anything, just a troll.

  15. FtBendConservative says:

Welding is an honest profession and I admire your tenacity. But you cheapen your discussion when you resort to name calling. Name calling is an immature response some have when faced with facts. Also running others down to make a point is generally viewed by others as negative.

Rep Olson is a naval aviator and a Rice grad, because you may not agree with him or vote for him doesn’t make him stupid.

  16. Joe Murphy says:

Too much circular logic here for me, but perhaps someone else is reading and thinking. I’m a stick welder, among other qualifications, but I also highly respect all education that manifests itself in intelligent thought and responsible community action, Mr. notveryconservativeafterall

  17. americafirst says:

It’s typical for liberals to throw the “stupid” remark at conservatives. They hurled it at Ronald Reagan, both George Bush and George W. I expect it by now, it slides right off as I consider the source.

  18. FtBendConservative says:

I’ll take any grad of the US Naval Academy over the highest ranked basket weaving grad from any liberal arts college.

    But then I’m a conservative.

  19. CST says:

So was John McCain, and it is well know that he isn’t very smart – finishing near last in his class. But he is fairly successful in politics. I see a pattern.

  20. FtBendConservative says:

JoeMurphy Rep Olson was a naval aviator and you?

  21. Joe Murphy says:

Olson is an idiot beyond belief. Some say he went to Rice, but this seems totally impossible. He panders to ignorance and plays us all into the pockets of his corporate contributors. Honesty and reason are not within his grasp or his interest.

  22. ben wagner says:

Olson is a good man,, I believe he will do what he promises Dist 22 he will do,, His meeting in Sienna gave lots of info about the bills that the President and the dems are trying to cram down our throats..

  23. jimwhenry2708 says:

People say it is a good idea to negotiate the new car price before you tell the dealer that you have a clunker!
