Airport Open House To Include Displays, Tours, Entertainment, Crime Prevention Fair

The Sugar Land Regional Airport will hold its Fifth Annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 3, and is inviting the community to tour and learn more about the facility and see some of the aircraft based in Sugar Land.

This year’s event has also been expanded to include the Sugar Land Police Department’s Crime Prevention Fair.

A static display of several types of aircraft is planned to showcase the variety of airplanes that utilize the airport. City staff members will be present to answer questions and provide “tram tours” which will highlight some points of interest at the airport from the point of view of the general aviation apron.

Airport staffers will also provide information about the positive benefits of the airport to Sugar Land, Fort Bend County and southwest Houston.

The event will also feature children’s activities and family-oriented entertainment. A face painter, live DJ and food concessions will round out the festivities.

The crime prevention fair, which is geared toward helping families and children stay safe, will be presented by police department. Crime prevention activities will include:

- Child I.D.:  Digitally produced, the cards include personal information and the child’s photo.  The cards are useful to parents who need important information about their child readily available in an emergency.

- Senior I.D.:  Similar to Child ID, these cards provide information about seniors, saving valuable time during emergencies.

- Child Safety Seat Demonstrations: National surveys have shown as many as 80 percent of safety seats are installed improperly.  Learn proper installation of child safety seats from certified “Child Safety Seat Technicians.”

- RAD Texas: SLPD offers personal safety and empowerment education classes for women throughout the year.  Women ages 11-71 receive instruction in the RAD Systems Basic Physical Defense Course.

The Sugar Land Regional Airport was named the #1 fixed-base operator in the Americas by the 2009 Aviation International News. The airport accommodates the largest business jets, such as the Gulfstream V and the Global Express, supported by a state-of-the-art traffic control tower and radar system, a sophisticated instrument landing system, high-intensity lighting, and a reinforced concrete runway measuring 100 feet wide by 8,000 feet long.

The airport is owned and operated by the City of Sugar Land but, city officials stressed, it is self-sustaining and uses no taxpayer dollars.

More than 100 Fortune 500 companies utilize the airport annually.

Hours for the open house will be 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The airport is located on Hwy. 6, just north of U.S. Hwy 90A.
