Crystal Buraruk, a senior and member of the Class of 2010 at Fort Bend Baptist Academy in Sugar Land, was recently selected as a 2009-10 National Hispanic Scholar.

The announcement was made by The College Board and the designation is given to approximately 5,000 students selected from a pool of more than 200,000 who took the 2008 PSAT/NMSQT and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino.
Students must have a GPA above 3.5, and also have achieved a minimum score on the PSAT. The National Hispanic Recognition Program was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students.
Buraruk is the daughter of Tavat and Erendira Buraruk of Sugar Land. During high school she has been involved in several extra curricular activities, and is currently a member of the Eagles Academic Team, while also participating in the French Club, Drama Club, Art Club, Spanish Club, while earning recognition as a member of The National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.
She is considering several colleges and universities, including Baylor University, Texas Christian University and Texas A & M University.

Congrats to the student. Do you have to be hispanic to be considered? Hmm, isn’t that racism? I thought those checkboxes were just for records, not to assign awards?
