Annual MS Walk Comes To Sugar Land

Sugar Land residents will be able to take steps against multiple sclerosis by joining the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Lone Star Chapter for Walk MS: Sugar Land, presented by KBR, at Oyster Creek Park on Nov. 14. Both one-half mile and 2.5 mile routes will be offered and breakfast will be available from Panera Bread, lunch by Lupe Tortilla. The event will also include a silent auction and entertainment for the whole family.

Walkers are encouraged to bring their dogs, and dog t-shirts and bandanas will be sold on- site to support fundraising initiatives. This is the first year the event has scheduled a Sugar Land walk, and about 500 walkers are expected to participate. Other events are scheduled for Kemah, Katy, The Woodlands and downtown Houston.

The Lone Star Chapter aims to raise more than $360,000 in the Houston area to drive research and support programs and services that address the needs and challenges faced by an estimated 20,000 Texans with MS living in the Lone Star Chapter service area.

In 2008, more than $1.4 million was raised through Lone Star Chapter walk events in 13 communities in Texas, despite the impact of Hurricane Ike, which forced the cancellation of three of the four scheduled Houston-area walks.

There is no cost to participate in the walks, and registration is available the day of each event. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by a 9 a.m. start. Funds are raised through corporate sponsorships, individual and team walkers who obtain donations from family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Although there is no minimum pledge requirement, the average participant raises $225.

“It’s a journey of a thousand miles,” said Mark Neagli, Lone Star Chapter president. “But each step brings us closer to our one destination – a world free of MS. Whether you walk, donate financially or volunteer, your contribution helps fund cutting-edge research, drive change through advocacy, and provide programs and services that help people with MS move their lives forward. And as we look forward to the future, there is hope for a brighter tomorrow.”

I have heard that mercury leads to MS. The Parish Plant, just 5 miles from Sugar Land Town Center, produces many tons of mercury in their nasty coal burning process.
This coal burning plant needs to be converted entirely to gas, ASAP.

The 3.5 million-kilowatt Parish plant is the largest generator of electricity in Texas and one of the largest in the country.

Situated on a 4,650-acre site near the Brazos River, the four regularly operated coal units consume some 36,000 tons of coal a day — three trainloads, each composed of about 115 cars.

I meant we are volunteering and could use the donations in our fund raising efforts or better yet, the company in joining the fight against MS!

We walked in this in 2007. It was a great deal of fun and a very worthy cause.
