The City of Sugar Land City Council has approved “Vision 2025,” an update to the city’s comprehensive plan, which was last updated in 2003. The update is an “ideal view” of where the city should be by 2025.
The document contains 11 principles that highlight key areas of importance for the city’s future. The goals outlined for 2025 are not new, but further refined and include “safe, beautiful and great neighborhoods; inclusive and environmentally responsible community; outstanding cultural arts, educational and recreational opportunities; superior mobility; regional business center; balanced development and redevelopment; destination activity centers; all enhancing community pride.”
Since March, with the assistance of residents, the City Council has made modifications to these statements. In June, the city hosted a Community Summit where more than 70 residents, many of whom are on various city boards and commissions, offered their input on the draft document. After participant feedback was compiled and categorized, the council was presented with results in July.
“The process we went through in adopting Vision 2025 has been extremely valuable,” said Mayor James Thompson. “All the work we have done the last six months has really brought clarity on how we can improve Sugar Land, and ensure it remains one of America’s premier cities for the foreseeable future.”
The finalized document will be referenced during the upcoming fall retreat where the City Council will identify mid-term goals that can be accomplished in the next two years. Vision 2025 and Guiding principles will then be utilized as the city looks to update its Comprehensive Plan at the end of 2009 and into 2010.

How does the city have any control over “safe, beautiful and great neighborhoods; inclusive and environmentally responsible community,” when HOAs are their own governments that can and do foreclose for “inclusive and environmentally responsible homes?” We are such pretenders.
