International Festival Comes To Stafford Centre This Weekend

The third annual International Festival of Fort Bend will take place from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Stafford Centre, 10505 Cash Rd. The purpose of the event is to celebrate Fort Bend’s “multi-ethnic communities and enable people to enjoy and experience the music, dance, foods, and arts of different cultures.”

Special-edition, framed commemorative stamps will be prizes for a drawing, and include Super Bowl XXXVIII, Studebaker Series 1953, and three Star Wars images including a storm trooper, Darth Vader and Chewbacca.

Missouri City, Sugar Land and Stafford are among those sponsoring the event, as well as local businesses and organizations. This year’s festival will have more than 30 cultures represented and feature a parade of nations, food, performances, crafts and children’s activities.

“These are special issue stamps, considered rare now and they’re commemorative,” said John Martinez of the U.S. Postal Service’s global diversity program. Winners of the drawing will receive the framed stamps via priority mail.

The “Brides of the World Fashion Show” will also be featured, with models taking to the runway in elaborate wedding dresses from around the world. The fashion show will be narrated with historical information about the gowns to take viewers inside the cultures that created each dress.

The bridal display will be followed by another fashion show featuring native costumes worn by children ages 7 to 12.  The outfits will represent many cultures of the world.  Some children will be joined by adults dressed in traditional costumes representing different regions of countries around the world.

“Once again, the International Festival of Fort Bend will bring you the melting pot of cultural harmony,” said Nazy Khadivian, president of the festival.  “This is a celebration of kaleidoscope color and a gift to the community that has given us all a warm welcome.”

The 2009 Festival Leadership Team includes Khadivian, 2009 president, Ben Stintsman, cultural chair, Nazanin Sarkari, cultural co-chair, Deepak Sane, treasurer, Susan Busch, vendor chair, Cheryl Olivier, ‘08 president and facility chair and Mitra Panchal, public relations and media chair.
