LCISD: Accused Teacher Made “Serious Mistake”

Anthony Gilbert was removed from his classroom at Terry High School and placed on administrative leave last Thursday, the day before his wife showed up at Sugar Land Methodist with their week-old baby, who had stab wounds in his chest and neck.

According to the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District officials, on Oct. 22 a 16-year-old student reported an “inappropriate relationship” with Gilbert to an administrator.

“When the report was made to a campus administrator, the district acted immediately by removing the teacher from the classroom,” said district representatives in a statement. The Rosenberg Police Department was notified, and began an investigation that resulted in a warrant issued for Gilbert’s arrest for sexual assault.

“In Lamar CISD the well being of every student takes precedence over everything else that we do,” said district representatives. “In this instance one of our employees made a serious mistake. In no sense can the district condone or defend his decisions or actions.”

According to police, Gilbert attempted to smother his wife in her sleep Thursday night, but stopped when she woke up. He then held her and the baby hostage overnight. Sugar Land police were notified around 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, when the baby’s mother took the child to Sugar Land Methodist hospital with stab wounds in his neck and chest.

The baby was taken by Life Flight to the Texas Medical Center, where he remains in critical but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

SWAT units went to Gilbert’s apartment, and were unable to get him to come to the door. A stand-off ensued, which was ended shortly after noon when police entered the apartment after throwing gas canisters inside. Gilbert was taken by Life Flight to the medical center, where he is expected to recover.

He has been charged with attempted capital murder. When he is released from the hospital he will be taken to the Fort Bend County Jail where he will be held without bond.
