Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
Here are some current needs:
Handy Dans and Danielles wanted
Local corporations, churches, schools, and civic associations are needed to sponsor volunteer crews of 15-35 people (including a crew leader) to help repair the homes of frail elderly and disabled Fort Bend residents, especially those impacted by Hurricane Ike. Assignments can include siding replacement, window repair, caulking, porch repair, step and wheelchair ramp construction, as well as yard cleanup and trash removal. Volunteer crews supply their own tools, ladders, scrapers, paintbrushes, hammers– and compassion.
The Good Ole Days
History and heritage will come alive when you don a period costume and help visitors travel back in time at Richmond’s famous George Ranch. Providing kids and adults with an “up close and personal” perspective on life in Fort Bend County from the 1820s to the 1940s, you can portray a cowboy, blacksmith, sharecropper or other occupation emblematic of the times. Assignments are available during daytime hours on weekdays and Saturdays. Training will be provided.
Prepare Tax Forms
Assist low and middle-income people needing help completing their federal tax returns. Participating in a program approved by the Internal Revenue Service, you’ll receive training that will equip you to staff one of the many tax assistance stations opening up at libraries and community centers throughout Fort Bend County during the tax season. This assignment calls for computer-literate volunteers with good interpersonal skills.
Additional opportunities:
- Art and dance instructors can help disadvantaged children in an after-school program in Missouri City realize their creative dreams and nurture their potential.
