The City of Sugar Land has received a grant for 50 percent of the cost of 45 new bulletproof vests for the police department. The city applied for the grant in June, and has been awarded $11,159.

The city will have to contribute the additional $11,159 towards the purchase of the vests, which includes the replacement of 24 vests with expiring warranties, 10 vests for new officers to be hired due to the River Park annexation and 11 vets for projected personnel turnover.

Council will consider tonight approving the matching funds, which are available in the police department’s budget for the Patrol Division.
