Olson/Dent Call For ‘Common Sense’ In Chemical Security Legislation
November 6th, 2009 | by Jamie Mock | Published in News | 40 Comments
Congressman Pete Olson (R-TX) and Congressman Charlie Dent (R-PA), will offer an amendment to HR 2868, the Chemical Security Anti-terrorism Act of 2009. H.R. 2868 would expand the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards which would “undo years of progress at DHS and place far reaching economic and logistical burdens on chemical facilities, small businesses and farmers,” according to Olson.
The Olson-Dent amendment would extend the current CFATS regulations for an additional three years to provide DHS the time to properly develop and implement a common sense, risk-based chemical facility security policy, according to Olson.
“The current standards should be extended and fully implemented to ensure comprehensive safety measures before we can assess the need for any adjustments,” said Olson, a member of the Homeland Security Committee. “Proper chemical security can be achieved without taking two years of hard work – and a meticulous, risk-based approach to security – and throwing it out the window. Ensuring the safety and security of chemical facilities is important, but excessive regulations that add burdensome costs and regulations onto businesses are not the answer. We need common sense chemical security that will keep Americans safe from terrorists, while sustaining our economy.”
“As of last week the Department of Homeland Security had still not reviewed two-thirds of the more than six thousand security vulnerability assessments submitted by regulated facilities based on regulations issued in June 2007,” said Dent, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection. “With the addition of drinking water and wastewater facilities, this bill would double the security vulnerability assessments already required by DHS. We are asking too much of the Department, and in return, we may see breaches in security – the very issue we are trying to deter through the current CFATS regime.”
Chemical facilities impacted by this legislation in TX-22 include chemical plants in Pasadena, La Porte and Sugar Land.

I’ve noticed that Olson uses ‘Common Sense’ to describe his opinons that he likes to force on his constituents.

Can you imagine how many Republicans would’ve been under investigation during Bush’s administration if it were allowed?!? Both parties are crooks.
And yeah, it would be nice if our reps represented us, not themselves. But Megabite - I believe people like you have set the bar so low, we have the corruption that you now see.

TX-22: Pete Olson’s Voter Fraud Confirmed by Associated Press
Brandon English
Oct 15, 2008
The Associated Press reported that records obtained give even more reason to suspect that Republican candidate Pete Olson (TX-22) committed voter fraud by voting in both Virginia and Connecticut in 2003.
On October 1 the Lone Star Project released documents showing that Olson, while registered to vote in Fairfax County, Virginia, voted in a special election in Newtown, Connecticut on August 12, 2003. They also showed that Olson voted in a primary election in Virginia on June 10, 2003 and the general election on November 4, 2003.
Reports from the Associated Press confirm Olson was indicated as having voted on the Newton, Connecticut voter log on August 12, 2003, and notes that “Newton required voters to show identification that included a photo, signature or an address, said Karin Aurelia and LeReine Frampton, Newton’s voter registrars.”

“Friday night, prosecutors in the case of The United States v. William Jefferson (D-LA) issued a memorandum recommending a prison sentence of 27 to 33 years for the former congressman from New Orleans, consistent with Federal sentencing guidelines. Such a long sentence is justified, according to the memo, by the severity of the crimes, flight risk, and the possibility of hidden assets”

You should have just said Mark Sanford, Jack Abramoff, Mark Foley, Mike Duvall, John Ensign, Paul Stanley, Bruce Barclay, Daniel Dean Thompson, Larry Craig, and so on, but yes there are enough scandals to go around. Maybe we need new laws and to stop slapping these guys on the wrist when they violate the law. No, resignation isn’t enough.

I’ll give you this much: you copy and paste well.
The fact of the matter is that there is corruption in every level of government, no matter the political party. ‘People is people’ as they say. No one is better at avoiding corruption based on their political leanings…
These elected officials are no different than you or I. If we opened our closets and aired them out for all to see, what do you think discussion board posters would say about us? Of course, this doesn’t justify their actions or behavior. If one is to become an elected official, one would think they’d strive for a corrupt-free workplace. Republicans, Democrats, Independents - all just as corruptible as the next.
