Local ice skaters of all ages are scheduled to perform in Discovering Christmas: The Magic of the Holidays on Ice at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center, 16225 Lexington Blvd., Dec. 12 and Dec. 13. Traditional seasonal music sets the stage for a unique presentation that tells story of a young boy searching for the meaning of Christmas.
Discovering Christmas is a themed holiday production that features more than 100 local ice skaters of all skill levels. The show is designed to be enjoyed by the entire family.
“The show provides the opportunity for local youth to showcase their skills while learning poise and grace in front of a live audience,” said Julie Holmes, director of figure skating at Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center. “Every year we are amazed at how beautiful the performances are.”
In addition to the title production, there will be special performances by local champions such as Nina Jiang, 2010 Southwestern Regional Championships Junior Ladies Silver Medalist and Kevin Wu Southwestern Regional Championships Intermediate Men’s Pewter Medalist. Also performing will be the Houston Ice Theatre Skaters. HITS is the 2009 U.S. Novice Freeskate National Champion and the 2009 International Novice Freeskate Silver Medalist for Theatre on Ice.
Show directors Val and Elena Prudsky are a well known coaching team and former principal pair for Russian Ballet on Ice. They were part of the choreographic team for the opening and closing ceremonies of 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and have toured extensively with international ice shows.
As part of its community outreach program, Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center is asking that guests bring donations of new or gently used clothing and household items to benefit the Fort Bend County Women’s Shelter. If you have questions regarding the donation drive, please contact Carrie Gould at 281-265-7463.
Public performances take place at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 12 and 2 p.m. Dec. 13. A special benefit dress rehearsal performance takes place on Friday, Dec. 11.
