Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations. Here are some current needs:
Green thumbs wanted
Team up with other volunteers in tending a Sugar Land or Richmond community garden that produces a variety of fruits and vegetables to help feed the hungry in the area. Rain or shine, adults and youngsters alike can help on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday mornings by assisting with digging, planting, weeding, and watering the garden. Local food pantries reap the bounty and distribute it to families in need.
Hospital volunteers
A “people person” has a variety of volunteer opportunities from which to choose at hospitals in Richmond, and in Sugar Land. Assignments can include greeting patients and visitors at the information desk, serving as a liaison between staff and patients in the intensive care unit, or working in the gift shop. Weekly four-hour shifts are available mornings and afternoons, Mondays through Fridays.
Medical personnel needed
Family practitioners, nurse practitioners, RN’S, LVN’s, medical assistants, certified nurse assistants, phlebotomists, and physician assistants are needed at a free medical clinic for low-income residents of Fort Bend County. Weekly or biweekly three-hour shifts are available Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at a social service organization’s Stafford headquarters.
Additional opportunities:
- Assist low-income families through a program that provides free tax preparation.
- Be a “Meals on Wheels” driver on your choice of weekdays for elderly shut-ins in the Fort Bend area.
- Connect with a homebound senior through friendly phone calls.
- Groom, walk, and play with dogs and cats awaiting adoption at an animal shelter in Rosenberg.
- Help a sports organization in Missouri City with data entry and word processing.
- Weekday, Saturday, and evening volunteer shifts are available at resale shops in Stafford that support local nonprofit agencies.
For more information on volunteer opportunities, call Volunteer Fort Bend at 281-499-9102, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The green thumb project looks like an excellent program for giving back, especially at Thanksgiving time!
