Recycle Your Used Cooking Oil At Sugar Land Public Works Facility

Did you deep-fry a turkey for the holidays and now have several gallons of used cooking oil?

The City of Sugar Land is reminding residents that pouring the oil down the sink can lead to problems within the sanitary sewer system. Pouring used cooking oil on the ground may kill grass, and pouring it into the storm drain is illegal.

So, what can be done with the used cooking oil? Recycle it!

Used, liquefied cooking oils are accepted Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Sugar Land Public Works Department, 111 Gillingham Lane.

Sugar Land residents may dispose of up to 10 gallons of liquid cooking oil per week at no charge.

The cooking oil recycling center is for residential customers and includes only liquid cooking grade fats, oils and grease. Petroleum products are not accepted.

For more information on cooking oil recycling, call 281-275-2450 or e-mail solidwaste@sugarlandtx.gov.

What are the safest and healthiest cooking oils?

I am glad to see Sugar Land aiming for any type of recycling. Other areas are working hard to make recycled cooking oil work for their communities. If everyone who deep-fried their turkeys would donate their used peanut oil, then who knows, maybe we could start running our school buses on turkey-fried peanut oil.

Just so I am not considered an opportunist by knowingly promoting the use of recycled fried turkey peanut oil, while these cooks stumble their way from the recycling area into the cardiovascular ward of the hospital or the grave, don’t say I didn’t tell ya, “Fried foods kill!” If you don’t believe me, fine, please donate your cooking oil…

Who uses 10 gallons a week of anything kitchen related?
