Stafford Municipal School District Superintendent Principal H.D. Chambers says the stabbing this morning at Stafford High School serves “as a reminder for all school districts to continuously be on guard for incidents such as this.”
The stabbing occurred around 8:20 a.m., during class change, when two 17-year-old students got into a fight sources say was over a female. The fight culminated with student Emanuel Lopez allegedly stabbing the victim four times in the abdomen with a screwdriver.
The victim was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital for “non-life-threatening” wounds and is reportedly in stable condition. Lopez was taken into custody by Stafford police and is expected to be charged with aggravated assault.
Immediately following the stabbing, students were kept inside classrooms while police investigated the incident. Classes resumed shortly after with additional security personnel on campus.
District representatives say SMSD administrators have performed a review of the “actions surrounding this incident” and are “making the necessary required adjustments.” Counseling was provided to students who requested it.
“These types of events serve as a reminder for all school districts to continuously be on guard for incidents such as this,” said SMSD Superintendent H.D. Chambers. “SMSD is proud of the priority and efforts placed on the safety and security for our students and staff. We will continue to work tirelessly to continue that emphasis as we learn from this and continue providing the greatest amount of safety and security measures possible.”

I think more needs to be reported on this regarding the alleged assailant, who he is, is he a ongoing problem for the school. Is this the first incident? What I am geting at is…schools are having to deal with problems that they can’t get rid of until an act like this one takes place. I am just curious to see if there is a gang affiliation that could have been involved?

I couldn’t believe when I read this. I don’t remember anything like this happening at SHS before.

I think you will find some of these smaller school districts tend to be more responsive to the publics they serve than the larger ones. Too often the larger ones are caught up in the politics of pushing the big bonds through so they can satisfy a certain element in our midst, rather than keeping the focus on educating the children.

Thank you. I just feel we need more honesty at times than fluff.

I like how Chambers handled this. Rather than denial and blaming, he confronted it and was open and honest about it. It is my hope the student recovers.
