Seventeen students from Stafford Primary and Elementary Schools were honored during an assembly recently for their winning entries in the Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse’s annual Drug-Free Art Contest.  Each winner was awarded a new bicycle and helmet thanks to a grant from Wal-Mart and support from FBRC.

Stafford students are encouraged to participate in the contest each October as part of Red Ribbon Week, celebrating drug-free kids.  The entries were judged on their theme, creativity and drug-free message.  Winners were selected from each grade level, and were presented their new bikes in front of fellow students, teachers and their parents.

FBRC prevention counselor Sakinah Shaw, who spends much of her time working with children in the Stafford schools, organized the contest.

“It is a calling for me to encourage kids to remain safe, healthy and drug-free on a daily basis,” said Shaw.  “This contest reinforces those messages and rewarded talented students for their hard work.”

Following the assembly, the children rode their new bikes through the school to the front office where they were picked up by their parents at the end of the day.
