Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
Here are some current needs:
Brighten the lives of seniors
Delight homebound senior citizens with hot lunchtime meals and some friendly conversation. As a meal delivery volunteer for a United Way agency in Fort Bend County, you’ll be helping low-income seniors remain independent while providing them with much-needed human contact. You’ll pick up the lunches at a designated site near you on your choice of weekdays and deliver them to shut-in seniors in the general area.
Children First
Protect and defend the rights and well being of child abuse victims. An agency based in Fort Bend County that works directly with the courts has many key volunteer assignments available. Some volunteers research placements for children who have been removed from their homes; others review foster care cases and make recommendations for permanent placement; still others work with families in which abuse has occurred.
Help the unemployed
Retired or semi-retired executives, managers, business owners are wanted as interviewers in a job-search program sponsored by a faith-based social service organization in Fort Bend. Working one-on-one with persons seeking employment, these volunteers conduct 30-minute job-interview practice sessions and then critique the would-be job candidates’ showing, offering constructive suggestions on to how to improve their performance when faced with real job interviews. This assignment involves just two hours a week, on Tuesdays between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Additional opportunities:
- Artists are invited to share their time and talents with at-risk children one hour a week for six weeks at local social service agencies.
- Assist low-income families through a program that provides free tax preparation.
- Make friendly visits to a resident of a 24-hour care facility in Richmond for persons with mental disabilities.
- Schedule and coordinate volunteers for a local housing program’s construction site in Rosenberg.
- Serve on a care team that provides in-home support to elderly shut-ins and persons with disabilities in the Richmond area.
- Sign up for training that will equip you to distribute preventive medication to Fort Bend County residents during a public health emergency.
