On Jan. 16 Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center, 16225 Lexington Blvd., will become ice skate central as hockey skaters, figure skaters, and recreational ice skaters from all over Houston come together to raise funds in support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Houston foundation.
Skaters will collect pledges in advance of the skate-a-thon. The funds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Skating begins at 11 p.m. and ends at 3 a.m. Adults will skate on one rink and children/families will skate on the other.
The event was created by the Texas Gulf Coast Figure Skating Club. Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center and the Fort Bend Women’s Center signed up in support of the event and now all three groups are spearheading this effort to help fight breast cancer.
“The Club had a strong desire to give back to the community and we thought this was the perfect way,” said Rene’ Bloom, president of Texas Gulf Coast Figure Skating Club. “We have all been touched by this disease so we were passionate that this was the right cause for us to support. Since most schools will be closed the following Monday for Martin Luther King Day, this was a great time to plan a late night event.”
In addition to raising money for Susan G. Komen, the skate-a-thon will provide donations of clothing and household items for the Fort Bend County Women’s Shelter. Participants and their families are asked to bring items for donation when they come to skate. The Women’s Shelter will be providing hospitality throughout the evening. Pappa La Rosa’s Flying Pizza, which is located inside Sugar Land Ice, is also sponsoring the event. The restaurant will remain open for the duration of the skate-a-thon. Fifteen percent of all revenues for the evening will be donated to Susan G. Komen. Pappa La Rosa will also be providing catering for a VIP dinner that will take place in conjunction with the event.
Skaters interested in participating can register by mail or in person at Sugar Land Ice. Registration forms are available at www.picksandpucks.org or in the Pro Shop of Sugar Land Ice. Rental skates will be available the night of the event.
