Volunteers Needed To Help Shut-In Seniors, Assist With Food Distribution

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.

Here are some current needs:

Casework aides needed

Shut-in senior citizens will benefit from your involvement with a new initiative launched by a local United Way agency.  Training will equip you to interview these seniors, assess their individual needs, and make recommendations for follow-up to professional social work staff.  The training will include in-class education as well as home visits with Case Managers.  This opportunity is available during daytime hours on weekdays.

Help families outfit school children

Assist a local school district with cleaning, sorting, and folding clothing donations for low-income families with school-aged children.  Coming by on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 9 a.m. and noon or Wednesdays between noon and 4 p.m., you’ll help bring order to what would otherwise be a chaotic collection of children’s garments and make the process of matching the various items to individual children’s needs more efficient.

Help with food distribution

A faith-based organization in Stafford needs volunteers to assist with packing groceries and distributing them to families in need.  Volunteers can help box up groceries Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Strong volunteers can also help by lifting boxes of groceries and distributing them to client’s cars on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Additional opportunities:

-         Assist low-income families through a program that provides free tax preparation.

-         Be a bingo caller and bring cheer and good fellowship to residents of a healthcare center in Missouri City.

-         Help a local housing program in Stafford with data entry and word processing

-         Lead arts and crafts activities for seniors at a health-care facility in Sugar Land.

-         Perform interviews and provide helpful feedback to job seekers in a faith based job search program in Fort Bend County.

-         Set up and maintain displays of baby clothing, cribs, strollers, and car seats at a “Mommy Store” run by a women’s center in Richmond.
