Boy Scouts Join Souper Bowl Of Caring Food Drive

Boy Scouts from the Sam Houston Area Council are helping in the fight against hunger in Greater Houston by joining The Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive with a new food drive component of their own. On Feb. 6, Boy Scouts will go door-to-door picking up food donations at homes located in local scouting districts, including homes in Fort Bend County. All food benefits Houston Food Bank, which serves nearly 400 hunger relief agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties.

Residents will receive additional information about the pick-up program at their home on Jan. 30, when approximately 12,000 Scouts and their leaders place door hangers on area homes with complete information. Only residents who receive door hangers about the event are being asked to place non-perishable food items outside their door by 9 a.m. on Feb. 6.

The Boy Scouts food drive debuts this year and serves as the official door-to-door effort for The Souper Bowl of Caring, a nationwide, grassroots movement of caring utilizing Super Bowl weekend to mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities.

“We are thrilled to partner with Souper Bowl of Caring to make it easier for the community to help the hungry, especially in these difficult times,” says Tom Varnell, president/scout executive.

The culmination of the Boy Scout effort will take place at Toyota Center with the Harlem Globetrotters serving as a final collection location on Feb. 5 and Feb. 6.

For the fourth consecutive year, H-E-B, Kroger and Randalls Food Markets have partnered with non-profit organization Souper Bowl of Caring to host Souper Bowl of Caring Houston benefiting the Houston Food Bank, set to take place around the upcoming Super Bowl weekend.  During this time, customers can purchase a pre-packaged food bag to donate or make a cash donation at one of more than 200 participating H-E-B, Kroger and Randalls grocery stores.  In addition, more than 200 local churches and more than 150 area schools will conduct food and donation drives.

Proceeds benefit the Houston Food Bank. For more information on participating stores, group participation and/or volunteer opportunities, visit www.souperbowl.org/houston.

This should be a big help to the food banks around town that are feeling the pinch this year along with the rest of us. Way to go!

It is great to see the scouts working to fill this gap in our area.
