Volunteers Needed To Help Survivors Of Domestic Violence At Local Shelter

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.

Here are some current needs:

Called to serve

Provide lunch 11:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or dinner 4:45 p.m.-6:00 p.m. any day of the week to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children at a shelter in Fort Bend County.  Adult volunteers, minimum 21 years old, who have gone through the agencies direct-service training and a background check, can help nourish survivors who are on the road to self –sufficiency.

Children First

Protect and defend the rights and well being of child abuse victims.  An agency based in Fort Bend County that works directly with the courts has many key volunteer assignments available. Some volunteers research placements for children who have been removed from their homes; others review foster care cases and make recommendations for permanent placement; still others work with families in which abuse has occurred.

Feed the hungry

Help box and distribute food for 400-500 people with a faith-based organization in Stafford that serves families in need.  Groups and individuals of all ages are invited to help sort and box food items Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Strong volunteers, who can lift boxes full of food, can really assist by placing those boxes in the cars of program participants on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Additional opportunities:

-         A Fort Bend area hospice program needs volunteers to provide support to terminally ill persons and their families.

-         Help provide food, tutoring, and recreational activities for Pre-K and elementary school children in a Stafford child-care program.

-         Mentor a student in need of academic and social support for thirty minutes to an hour a week at a Fort Bend school of your choice.
